John Oliver went after Fox News host, Tucker Carlson once again last night during his late-night show.

The British commentator dedicated the latest episode of Last Week Tonight to the issue of crime and bail reform.

Oliver took issue with the US bail system, which effectively grants freedom for those with the cash to enjoy such a luxury.

“We shouldn’t hold people captive in shi*** conditions simply because they can’t buy their way out,” he told viewers on Sunday night.

“Cash bail is arbitrary, destructive and basically criminalizes poverty.”

Oliver pointed to a claim made by Tucker Carlson who had suggested bail reform in New York had catalysed crime rates in the city.

Data suggests, despite alternative reports, that the 95% in New York helped by the reforms were not rearrested on additional charges.

John Oliver goes after Tucker Carlson for misleading report

After Oliver previewed a clip of Carlson making the allegation on bail reform, the host was quick to fire back.

“I’m honestly surprised anything seems clear to a man with resting concussion face. He honestly looks like he’s studying a full-body mirror desperately trying to find his penis,” the Last Week Tonight host joked.

Remember, Carlson is no stranger to being covered by John Oliver. The HBO commentator has made a number of comments about the Fox star over the years, even dedicating an entire 24-minute segment to Tucker’s career (see below) in 2021.

Oliver spoke in depth on Tucker Carlson’s incredibly influential role in American political discourse, despite highlighting his concerns about how the Fox host is favoured by white supremacist thought groups.

The Last Week Tonight star has consistently preached the ideological dangers of Carlson’s rhetoric. In other cases, the host is far more hyperbolic in his analysis of the Fox host.

Despite Oliver’s critique, Carlson continues to lead the ratings as one of the country’s most-watched news anchors, with millions tuning in every night for his primetime show.

Last Week Tonight wins big

Oliver’s latest segment comes after the political program yet again won the Variety Talk Series award at the Emmy’s this month.

The host’s latest win sparked more controversy than usual after Bill Maher offered a scathing review of why his show, Real Time, never finds success at similar television ceremonies.

Speaking to Chris Cuomo, Maher admitted: “I tell the truth. I don’t perform for just one half of the country and say the things that will make them applaud, and there’s nothing wrong with that.”
