Journalist, Jesse Singal took to Twitter this week, taking issue with John Oliver’s recent scientific claims on puberty blockers.

After Last Week Tonight aired their latest piece on transgender rights, viewers have taken to Twitter to applaud Oliver’s honest analysis.

One user wrote via Twitter: “John Oliver did an entire episode on trans rights and I have to say it is SO refreshing to see the old Daily Show crew come together again to stand up against attacks on the trans community. It’s a great episode. Go watch it.”

Despite the widespread acclaim, a former New York Magazine journalist disputed a claim made by Oliver during the episode.

“It’s extremely irresponsible for John Oliver to [claim] that puberty blockers are reversible. The NHS *deleted this claim from its website* because no one actually knows,” he told followers.

“There are all sorts of unanswered questions involving not just bone density but cognitive development.”

Singal then referred to an article, reporting that the National Health Service in the UK had removed the claim that puberty blockers were in fact reversible.

The journalist went further, citing instances where drugs such as Lupin have caused “lasting health problems” according to articles cited.

John Oliver: Informed decisions are necessary

Despite this, Oliver reassured viewers that informed decisions are crucial in gender-affirming care scenarios.

The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh also touched on Oliver’s segment this week, claiming that such procedures are still “experimental”. He told viewers: “You cannot pause the human body like you pause a television John.”

“Human bodies cannot just hang out in a state of suspended animation without consequence. That’s not how it works.”
