Viewers attack Jimmy Kimmel for “disgusting” viral Emmy stunt
Jimmy Kimmel is facing major backlash this morning. The ABC host was seen lying cold on stage for a number of minutes during an acceptance speech from Quinta Brunson at The Emmy’s last night.
After losing an award in his late night category, Kimmel jokingly faked passing out on stage after a supposed night of heavy drinking to overcome his loss. Viewers are seemingly outraged today, more specifically due to Kimmel gate-crashing another acceptance speech.
Quinta Brunson, winning the Writing for a Comedy Series title last night, was forced to accept her award just inches away from Kimmel lying flat on the stage.
When first receiving the award, the writer told Kimmel: “Jimmy, wake up. I won.”
Shortly after the end of the event, Brunson explained her thoughts on being in the crossfire of the gag.
“I felt like the bit didn’t bother me that much,” she revealed. “I don’t know what the internet thinks!” Brunson went on to joke she would be tempted to “punch him in the face” when she appears on Kimmel’s show later this week.
Viewers in fury over Jimmy Kimmel’s Emmy stunt
Whilst Brunson may have taken the live gate-crash well, viewers at home were far from impressed.
Some users have even accused the host of using his “white male privilege” to steal the writer’s moment.
One user on Twitter wrote: “What Jimmy Kimmel did to Quinta Brunson was so disgusting. Not even surprised with his history of racism. & This isn’t the first time he went out of his way to ruin Black people’s moments.”
Another reacted, “I don’t know of a better example of invasive white male privilege than Jimmy Kimmel laying in the middle of Quinta Brunson’s #Emmys2022 speech. He had no business/right to take up space in the way that he did.”
“It’s like, “okay, you lost again.” Wonderful. He had to do ALL of that during a Black woman’s first EMMY win, though? Read the room.”
Others have come to Kimmel’s defence, arguing, “I detest woke Jimmy Kimmel but this is insane. He’s committing to a bit. That’s in no way white male privilege.”
