Jeopardy! finally returned on Monday, ending its summer hiatus. Fans welcomed the game show back for its 39th season.

August saw Jeopardy! showcase some of the most exciting episodes from the past season. But nothing quite compares to new questions and new challengers.

Who is the current Jeopardy! champion?

Luigi de Guzman, an attorney from Arlington, Virginia, entered Monday’s game as the current Jeopardy! champion. He won back in July, earning $23,401.

Monday he defended his title against Katherine May, a financial institution risk manager from Riverside, Illinois, and Tim Faulkner, a paperboy from Kalamazoo, Michigan.

De Guzman proved rust wasn’t an issue with an impressive “Jeopardy!” round performance. The defending champ led with $14,000. May was a distant second with $2,200, followed by Faulkner with $2,000.

It was more of the same in “Double Jeopardy!” as de Guzman dominated on the way to banking $38,400. Faulkner jumped into second with $5,200 while May dropped to third with $1,400.

“Final Jeopardy!” was a formality, but both de Guzman and Faulkner answered correctly. De Guzman added $4,000 to his total, bringing his two-day winnings up to $65,801.

What was tonight’s Final Jeopardy! clue?

It’s always good to see a majority of players answer “Final Jeopardy!” correctly, even if it doesn’t impact the standings. Here’s tonight’s clue in the category “19th Century Novels”:

“This bell was named Marie…alone in the southern tower, with her sister Jacqueline, a bell of lesser size”, says this novel

Unfortunately, Katherine May couldn’t come up with the correct response. She incorrectly guessed “Don Quixote” as her answer.
