Saturday Night Live continued its Primetime Emmys domination on Monday night. SNL took home the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series.

SNL didn’t exactly face much competition this year. It was one of only two shows nominated in the category alongside A Black Lady Sketch Show. And while the HBO show deserved its third consecutive nomination, it realistically stood little chance against Saturday Night Live.

The Outstanding Variety Sketch Series category was created in 2015. The Television Academy decided to separate it from the Outstanding Variety Talk Series. That meant that SNL no longer had to compete against Last Week Tonight with John OliverThe Late Show with Stephen ColbertLate Night with Seth Meyers, and other late-night TV series.

With its win on Monday night, SNL has now won this award six consecutive times. Key & Peele took home the award back in 2016. Since then, SNL has seen its competition dwindle as fewer and fewer shows got nominated for the categories in recent years.

Saturday Night Live will look very different this season

Saturday Night Live deserves to celebrate another Emmy win tonight. The award means that many members of the SNL family went out on a high note.

Cast members Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, Kyle Mooney, Melissa Villasenor, Alex Moffat, and Aristotle Athari all won’t be back for the upcoming season 48. Behind the scenes, longtime producer, booker, and talent scout Lindsay Shookus also won’t return.

So when SNL returns next month, expect things to look very different in Studio 8H. But the Emmy Awards still look the same year after year.
