On Monday night, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver received more proof that it’s late-night TV’s best show. The HBO series picked up its seventh Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Talk Series.

Last Week Tonight faced some tough competition this year. The Late Show with Stephen ColbertJimmy Kimmel Live! The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, and Late Night with Seth Meyers all had spectacular years. But once again, they all fell short of toppling John Oliver and company.

The Television Academy created the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category in 2015 when it separated the nominees from those up for Oustanding Variety Sketch Series. The distinction has allowed Last Week Tonight to dominate the category while Saturday Night Live does the same against other sketch series.

In fact, the first year the category was introduced was the only time Last Week Tonight with John Oliver didn’t win. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart won in 2015 before John Oliver and his team went on their current winning streak.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is closing in on The Daily Show’s win total

Considering how relatively new the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category is to the Emmy Awards, it’s no surprise that Last Week Tonight with John Oliver holds the record for most wins.

But, it’s worth noting that the HBO late-night TV series is closing in on The Daily Show for most Emmy wins if you also count victories in Outstanding Variety Series. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart has 11 wins in that category. With its win on Monday night, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver jumped Saturday Night Live for second place.
