Stephen Colbert’s monologue on Wednesday night reacted to the news that the Justice Department is investigating former President Donald Trump for his role in the January 6 insurrection. The Late Show host says it’s about time.

According to the Washington Post, the DOJ has been questioning witnesses and investigating the former president regarding efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The investigation is reportedly also looking into Trump’s plan to pressure Vice President Mike Pence to reject electors.

Throughout the Jan. 6 committee hearings, many have wondered when Trump would face accountability. We can certainly count Stephen Colbert among those who have wanted the former president to face some sort of consequence for the Capitol riot.

So when Colbert heard the news, he simply said “it’s about damn time.” Watch the rest of his response below:

Stephen Colbert is looking forward to seeing presidential history be made

While President Trump coming under investigation is a big deal, it doesn’t necessarily guarantee anything will happen. But for Stephen Colbert, the fact the DOJ is investigating a “scheme” is evidence enough that wrongdoing took place. The Late Show host joked that only crimes get called a “scheme,” anyway.

If Trump does face charges, he’ll become the first former president to earn that distinction. It’s a moment in history that Colbert is very much looking forward to seeing come true.
