The Emmy Awards are soon on the horizon. Here are the late night shows nominated for an award this year.

The awards show has nominated five shows this year, all possible contenders. The following shows are nominees for Variety Talk Show Series: The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Last Week Tonight has won the award every year since since 2016, with the political talk show contending for it’s seventh title.

John Oliver has had yet another astounding year on his talk show, airing another set of viral monologues throughout this year. The host’s segments on Critical Race Theory, Subway and Taiwan have been notable favourites amongst viewers, reaching millions of views across social media platforms.

Last year, despite thankful for his success, Oliver dedicated his award to late night veteran, Conan O’Brian, saying: “I think like many of us in the room I was rooting for Conan so this is bittersweet. Thank you, Conan for 30 years of inspiring comedy writers.”

“If you have time in the next week, do what I’ve been doing and YouTube clips of Norm and Conan, because it just doesn’t get better than that.”

Could another late night show win?

There’s always the possibility we could see another late night show take one of those elegant trophies home at this year’s award ceremony.

Fans are less hopeful of another host making an acceptance speech this year, however. One user wrote on Twitter: “You can call this award The John Oliver award. ‘Cause he wins every year.”

Colbert and Trevor Noah have had most noticeably the most successful past 12 months on the air, but we can still expect it to be a difficult race to overtake Oliver’s reign over the category.

Before Oliver’s first Emmy award for Last Week Tonight, Jon Stewart’s Daily Show had won back in 2015.
