John Oliver spoke on the recent Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v Wade last weekend calling out democrats for failing to do enough to protect abortion rights.

The host said on Last Week Tonight: “What the Supreme Court has just done is utterly devastating. The message it sends is pretty clear: We don’t care if pregnancy kills you. We don’t care if you don’t want to be pregnant. We don’t care about you at all.”

Oliver also made note of recent rebuttals to the backlash, slamming down claims that women can easily seek treatment in other states, noting early preparation behind the scenes from lawmakers to block the ability to do so.

Oliver also used his monologue on Sunday night to take issue with Justice Clarence Thomas’ recent comments to further court action in additional ways, including revisiting gay rights legislation.

The host continued, “Even if we don’t go down that slippery slope, this is already bad enough”.

John Oliver later went on to point out a lack of determination from democrats to do more prior to the ruling, suggesting: “We have talked before, multiple times, about how exactly we got here. The years of planning by anti-abortion forces, and the failure of Democrats to effectively mobilize to stop them.”

John Oliver: “This is a fight for people’s right to have control over their bodies”

“This is a fight for people’s right to have control over their bodies. It’s about bodily autonomy,” he told viewers.”

“Some who get abortions are survivors of rape or incest, others might need one for medical reasons, but also just to be clear, some will be seeking an abortion because they fucking want one, and this is very much about them, too.”
