Stephen Colbert has been absent from his usual late night hosting duties for some time after coming down with COVID-19. However, the host is expected to make a return to the late night show very soon.

Last week it was announced on Twitter that Colbert was continuing his recovery after testing positive. The tweet, posted by the Late Show, updated viewers: “Stephen is experiencing symptoms consistent with a recurrence of COVID.”

It is unknown if Colbert simply took longer to recover from his recent positive test or indeed, had contracted COVID a number of times this month.

“Out of an abundance of caution for his staff, guests, and audience, he will be isolating for a few additional days. The Late Show will not be taping new episodes until further notice”.

Now, it seems the late night show is set to return to the Ed Sullivan Theatre tonight.

Writing on Twitter yesterday, Colbert told fans, “I’m footloose and Covid free! See you tomorrow.”

The Late Show chose not to hire a temporary guest host to replace Colbert whilst he recovered.

ABC’s primetime late night host, Jimmy Kimmel instead chose to keep the show on the air whilst he recovered from the Coronavirus earlier this year. Comedian, Mike Birbiglia keep Kimmel’s seat warm during the host’s absence on the late night show.

Which guests appear this week on the Late Show?

If Colbert’s return wasn’t exciting enough, this week’s guest list looks more than promising.

Comedian, Ricky Gervais will join Colbert on Tuesday ahead of the release of Netflix’s Supernature comedy special. Mike Myers will also sit down with the late night host on Thursday, promoting his new miniseries, The Pentaverat, released this month.
