Bill Maher made a surprise remark this Friday, supporting Elon Musk after the tech businessman bought a 9.2% stake in Twitter.

Twitter’s CEO, Parag Agrawal announced Elon Musk’s endeavour on Tuesday, pronouncing the “great value” that Musk would bring to the board.

The late night host answered a question put to him on Friday, asking his take on Elon Musk’s recent endeavours with the social media platform. Maher told viewers, “If you deny someone’s right to speak on Twitter, you’re basically saying you don’t have free speech rights.” He added: “I think that’s what Elon Musk wants to fix at Twitter.”

Last year, Maher took a very different perspective on the Tesla CEO’s practises, taking a hit at such tech leaders, he claimed, falsely labelling themselves as environmentally minded. He said, “Bitcoin uses more electricity per transaction than any other method known to mankind”, an industry Musk is actively involved in.

This comes after a string of controversial comments on HBO’s Real Time after Maher defended Chris Rock’s comments regarding Jada Pinkett Smith at the Oscars last month. Maher again spoke on the debate on his show this week, claiming the “war on jokes must end”.

Bill Maher faces mixed reaction online after Elon Musk admission

Maher’s comments on Musk’s share in Twitter sparked mixed reaction online.

One user on Twitter cheered on the HBO star: “Once again I find myself agreeing with Bill Maher!”. Another took issue with Maher’s take, claiming they thought they were “watching FoxNews”.

Maher is no stranger to controversy, often using his political talk show to create a forum of debate on contentious talking points. We wouldn’t have it any other way!
