Saturday Night Live finally returns tonight with a brand new episode. And once again, SNL is turning the show over to a first-time host.

Season 47 has seen a long list of SNL rookies take the stage at Studio 8H. From Kim Kardashian to Jason Sudeikis, fans have seen several celebrities try their hand at hosting Saturday Night Live.

The trend continues tonight. Comedian Jerrod Carmichael makes his SNL debut and will serve as tonight’s host. He’s joined by musical guest Gunna.

Carmichael starred in The Carmichael Show on NBC from 2015 to 2017. He’s also appeared in movies such as NeighborsThe Disaster Artist, and Mid90s. Carmichael was the director and star of the 2021 film On the Count of Three.

His HBO comedy special Rothaniel premiered on April 1. It immediately made headlines as the comedian came out as gay during his set.

What to expect from Jerrod Carmichael as tonight’s Saturday Night Live host

Of course, comedians are typically the most comfortable hosts on Saturday Night Live. They’re used to performing in front of a crowd and can handle both deafening laughter … and deafening silence.

Carmichael’s credits showcase his range. He’s done more offbeat series like Comedy Bang Bang and Lucas Bros. Moving Co. At the same time, he’s appeared in more mainstream titles like Transformers: The Last Knight and the animated film Ferdinand.

Expect Carmichael’s monologue to draw some material from his Rothaniel special. The media attention around his personal life will also be hard to ignore, so anticipate Carmichael to reference it.

All season, the cast and crew of Saturday Night Live have accommodated first-time hosts. So far, no one has looked terrible as long as they came to the show with an open attitude. That experience, combined with Carmichael’s comedy talent, should make for an entertaining start to SNL’s stretch run.

Saturday Night Live airs at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC. The show also streams live on Peacock.
