Seth Meyers: A Closer Look at Trump’s praise for Vladimir Putin
By Matt Moore
Former President Donald Trump weighed in on the crisis in Ukraine, heaping praise on Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of Russia’s invasion. On Late Night with Seth Meyers, “A Closer Look” was used to examine Trump’s comments.
Reacting to news of an impending invasion by Russia, Donald Trump described President Putin as “savy.” The former president went on in the interview, describing Putin’s recognition of two breakaway regions of Ukraine as “genius.”
President Trump wasn’t done there. He went on to suggest that American tanks would be better served at the southern border than Ukraine.
Breaking down comments like these have long been an essential function of Seth Meyers’ “A Closer Look” The Late Night host and his staff didn’t disappoint, slamming Donald Trump for his continued admiration of Vladimir Putin.
A Closer Look: Seth Meyers can’t believe Donald Trump still wants Vladimir Putin’s approval
Seth Meyers acknowledged that virtually no one supports Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine. The Russian president doesn’t boast too many supporters around the world.
However, Donald Trump remains among those impressed by Putin’s policies and worldview. It’s something that Meyers can’t wrap his head around, even after years of listening to every word said by Trump. “It’s just insane that Trump is still so desperate to praise a bloodthirsty tyrant like Putin every chance he gets,” said the late-night host.
Meyers also takes the opportunity to remind his viewers that Donald Trump is the leader of the Republican Party. Late Night fans know that Meyers has no use for the GOP and what he considers its anti-democratic behavior.
The crisis in Ukraine continues to escalate and world leaders continue to condemn Vladimir Putin. Whether Donald Trump shifts his view remains to be seen, but don’t expect Seth Meyers to believe anything will change.
