Who’s hosting Saturday Night Live tonight, December 11?
By Matt Moore
Saturday Night Live returns with a brand new episode tonight. Sho who has SNL entrusted to bring the show out of its hiatus as the host?
Through the first seven episodes of SNL season 47, we’ve seen seven first-time hosts. From Owen Wilston to Simu Liu, everyone who has taken the stage at Studio 8H has done so with no prior hosting experience.
That trend will continue tonight. Singer/songwriter Billie Eilish will host tonight’s brand new episode of Saturday Night Live. Eilish will also serve as the musical guest.
While it’s her first time hosting SNL, it’s not her first time on the show. Fans may recall that Eilish was the musical guest for the season 45 premiere hosted by Woody Harrelson. Also, we can’t forget that Melissa Villasenor portrayed the “Bad Guy” singer in a sketch last season.
How will Billie Eilish compare to other recent double-duty hosts on Saturday Night Live?
Saturday Night Live has had actors, athletes, politicians, comedians, and more serve as a host over the past 47 seasons. But it takes a special kind of talent to be asked to not only host, but act as the musical guest. Billie Eilish is definitely one of those talents.
In recent seasons, other double-duty hosts/musical guests include Nick Jonas (season 46), Harry Styles (season 45), Halsey (season 44), and Miley Cyrus (season 41).
With the exception of Halsey, everyone on that list came to SNL with acting experience. It could be argued that any one of them would have been invited to host the show alongside a different musical guest.
So right off the bat, Billie Eilish is at a disadvantage compared to her double-duty predecessors. However, SNL has proven that a comedy background and acting experience aren’t necessary to make for an entertaining host. It helps that Eilish will be supported by a veteran cast that includes Kenan Thompson, Cecily Strong, Pete Davidson, and the return of Kate McKinnon.
