Is Saturday Night Live new tonight, October 2?
By Matt Moore
It’s the first Saturday in October. Will it also bring the first brand new episode of Saturday Night Live season 47?
Fans last saw SNL on May 22 as Anya Taylor-Joy and Lil Nas X closed out the season. Plenty of uncertainty surrounded the show heading into the new season, but we now have some more clarity on that.
Starting with the season premiere: There will be a brand new episode of Saturday Night Live tonight as SNL kicks off season 47.
Your host will be Loki and The French Dispatch star Owen Wilson. It’s his first time as a host. The musical guest will be Star-Crossed singer Kacey Musgraves, making her second SNL appearance.
What will Saturday Night Live season 47 look like?
The novel coronavirus pandemic made things difficult for Saturday Night Live during the past two seasons. Production initially shut down before moving to “Saturday Night Live at Home.” Then back in the studio, the audience was limited. Strict safety protocols were in place for the cast and crew, making for a challenging experience.
However, the first promo for season 47 shows things are already a little different. Owen Wilson, Kacey Musgraves, and Kenan Thompson don’t wear masks as we saw in all of season 46’s promos. The vaccine’s availability will certainly make things a little easier for SNL.
The cast will also be different this season. Fan-favorite Beck Bennett announced he won’t return this year, ending his eight-year run at Saturday Night Live. Featured player Lauren Holt won’t be back either.
Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang were promoted to repertory players. New featured players making their debut tonight include Aristotle Athari, James Austin Johnson, and Sarah Sherman.
Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, Pete Davidson, Colin Jost, and Michael Che also return for season 47. All of the performers were subject of some level of speculation that they would walk away from SNL before the new season.
Saturday Night Live airs tonight at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC. Sign up with fuboTV to stream the show and more from NBC!
