Bill Maher revisited the issue of a “Black” national anthem played before NFL games on Friday’s Real Time. The late-night TV host warned that it would do far more harm than good in uniting the country.

On the Sept. 11 episode of Real Time, Maher criticized the NFL’s decision to include a performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before the game. Some have referred to the song as the “Black national anthem.”

While Maher isn’t opposed to the song itself, he did take issue with two anthems being played before the game. He suggested that the current anthem could be replaced — as long as there was only one anthem.

Maher compared the situation to segregation. On the Sept. 24 episode, Maher returned to the issue have facing criticism for his perspective. The comedian explained how two anthems follows a growing trend of segregation-like practices at colleges and universities.

Bill Maher warns about going so “woke,” it turns out racist

Bill Maher responded to criticism from The View‘s Whoopi Goldberg. The Real Time host dismissed the notion of needing “re-education.” Instead, he made it clear that he had no problem with “Lift Every Voice in Sing.” What he didn’t want was two anthems for two different populations of Americans. Why not one for every other race or gender identity, Maher asks.

The topic provides Maher with another jumping-off point to attack what he calls “woke” policies and ideas from progressives. He warns about “becoming so woke, you come out the racist side.” This came after Maher highlighted segregated orientation, graduation ceremonies, and more at U.S. colleges.

Maher wraps up the “New Rule” segment by sharing some cautionary tales. He points to other countries with histories of racial and ethnic conflict, saying “countries do disintegrate into madness when they indulge their separatist tendencies.” It may sound like a massive leap from songs before a football game, but for Maher, it’s not that hard to imagine.
