Stephen Colbert startled by Trump’s version of Jan. 6 Capitol riot
By Matt Moore
In a recent interview with Fox News, former President Donald Trump shared his interpretation of the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol. For Stephen Colbert, it amounted to a shocking warping of the truth.
Trump has a demonstrated history of seeing things the way he wants to see them. The Russia investigation, Charlottesville, and the 2020 election are just a few examples of when Trump has distorted facts or presented an alternate set of facts.
When it comes to the attempted insurrection at the Capitol, Trump went so far as to call it a “love fest” during an interview with Maria Bartiromo.
Stephen Colbert’s monologue reacted to the interview. The Late Show host reminded Trump that everyone watched the Capitol riot live on television. But the former president has an explanation for that, too:
Stephen Colbert calls out Trump’s ‘startling claim’ about the Jan. 6 Capitol riot
Former President Donald Trump’s recollection of the Jan. 6 riot surprised Stephen Colbert. The late night TV host couldn’t quite believe how anyone saw the chaos as a “love fest.” After all, the entire ordeal was captured on camera by journalists, security footage, and by those who took part in the riot.
Yet according to Donald Trump, news outlets are withholding the real footage. If the media showed these hidden tapes, the public would see the love between the protestors and the Capitol police. At least, that’s Trump’s version of reality.
It’s not the first conspiracy theory to come out about Jan. 6. Colbert doesn’t dwell on it for too long, a sign that he doesn’t want to give Trump too big of a spotlight yet can’t fully ignore the former president. This is especially true when Trump makes “startling claims,” as Colbert described the latest comments.
