SNL announces the hosts for the final episodes of season 46
This afternoon, Saturday Night Live officially announced the final two hosts and musical guests of season 46: Keegan-Michael Key and Anya Taylor-Joy will make their SNL debuts.
These two hosts are much less controversial choices than Elon Musk, who is hosting the upcoming show on May 8, although both musical guests have caused some “controversy” recently.
Lil Nas X sparked outrage from certain corners of the internet because of the religious and sexual imagery in his latest music video.
Meanwhile, Olivia Rodrigo was at the center of a very dramatic love triangle with two other Disney Channel stars.
An early look at SNL with Keegan-Michael Key and Olivia Rodrigo
Keegan-Michael Key is a huge name in sketch comedy, best known for creating and starring in the Emmy-winning sketch series Key and Peele. Before that, he was a mainstay on SNL’s rival sketch show, MadTV. It’s also worth noting that Key is set to star alongside SNL cast member Cecily Strong in the Apple TV+ series Schmigadoon!. Other than former cast members like Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph, Keegan-Michael Key is the most qualified person to host SNL this year, so this episode could be one of the season’s best.
Olivia Rodrigo’s debut single “Driver’s License” topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts earlier this year, and it made Rodrigo into a pop superstar overnight. If you aren’t a pop music fan, you still probably know “Driver’s License” from the “Regé-Jean Page/Bad Bunny” episode earlier this season, in which Regé-Jean Page and the men of the SNL cast all got really into singing the song. If you haven’t seen that sketch yet, definitely give it a watch before Rodrigo takes the Studio 8H stage on May 15.
Rodrigo is also an actor (she’s currently the star of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series on Disney+) so don’t be surprised if she pops up in a sketch or two.
An early look at SNL with Anya Taylor-Joy and Lil Nas X
2020 was a huge year for Anya Taylor-Joy. At the beginning of the year, she starred in a film adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Emma, which came out in mid-February and was one of the last movies to hit theatres before the pandemic struck. Then, at the end of the year, she truly broke out thanks to her role in the smash-hit TV series The Queen’s Gambit. Now that she’s cemented herself as a true star in Hollywood, Taylor-Joy will take to the stage at SNL for what could very well be the first of many hosting appearances.
Lil Nas X is an absolutely perfect choice to be on SNL, and if I weren’t so excited to see Taylor-Joy as host, I’d be disappointed that Lil Nas isn’t pulling double duty as host and musical guest. He got his start making comedy content on the internet, and anyone who follows Lil Nas on Twitter knows he’s a very funny guy. He’s also an incredible performer, as you can tell from watching any of his music videos. As with Olivia Rodrigo, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Lil Nas X shows up in a sketch or two. Perhaps he’ll run into his doppelgänger since Chris Redd does a pretty fantastic Lil Nas X impression. Check it out below.
