Tonight, Carey Mulligan will be hosting Saturday Night Live alongside musical guest Kid Cudi.  Mulligan will join the ranks of British talent recently appearing as hosts for the show.

Viewers saw Daniel Kaluuya host last week and provided hilarious performances in multiple sketches. Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page also hosted the show back in February.

Known for her prolific resume in stage acting, Carey Mulligan’s career started in the theatre and she made her film debut as Kitty Bennett in the 2005 film Pride & Prejudice based on the novel by Jane Austen. Since then, she has enjoyed roles in a variety of genres and even has a few Broadway credits under her belt.

Mulligan can be seen in a wide range of titles including dramas such as Drive, Inside Llewyn Davis, and The Great Gatsby. But while viewers might be used to seeing her in more dramatic roles, she may also be recognized as the star of the recent black comedy hit Promising Young Woman. The film received positive reviews for its storyline and of course the performances of the cast. Mulligan was nominated for both a Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Actress. She will next appear in the upcoming Leonard Bernstein biographical film directed by Bradley Cooper.

In the promo below, you’ll see Mulligan excited about the new nickname that cast member Kenan Thompson gives her as well as giving dramatic flair to the usually light-hearted SNL promos:

Will host Carey Mulligan be able to keep up on Saturday Night Live?

Carey Mulligan has done more than just drama in her career. She appeared in one episode of the science-fiction show Doctor Who and her voice can be heard in Funny or Die’s The Spoils of Babylon, a comedy miniseries featuring SNL alum Kristin Wiig. In addition to that, there’s been a trend of having more British talent appear on the show and while usually there’s hesitancy with dramatic actors being put into comedic roles, bringing those British sensibilities to the show brings an edge to each of the sketches.

Judging from the show’s past, dramatic actors actually tend to have the right know-how when it comes to performing comedy. It’ll come as no surprise if Carey Mulligan is allowed to showcase her ability to shock audiences with her talent. Saturday Night Live is the best place for dramatic actors to do so thanks to the fast-paced nature of the show. Her appearance will definitely set the tone for possibly seeing her take on more comedic roles in the future.

Kid Cudi comes to Saturday Night Live as the musical guest

Kid Cudi is best known for his 2008 hit single “Day n’ Nite” and has collaborated with artists such as Travis Scott, Pharrell Williams, Eminem, and Snoop Dogg.

The Grammy-winning rapper and entertainer expressed his excitement about tonight’s SNL appearance in a tweet saying, “If u know me, u know snl is a huge dream of mine. This is huge. Cannot friggin wait!”. While it will be his first time as the featured musical guest, this isn’t the artist’s first time appearing on the show. He was last seen performing alongside rapper Kanye West in 2018 and made a cameo in a pre-recorded sketch featuring cast member Kyle Mooney.

Cudi has already familiarized himself with the late night television scene having made appearances on shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon since 2009. Cudi acted in the HBO comedy-drama series How To Make It In America and voiced a character in The Cleveland Show. Cudi also starred in the HBO drama We Are Who We Are.

Cudi can be seen on the popular IFC comedy show Comedy Bang Bang hosted by comedian Scott Aukerman. The show is known for its outlandish and surreal humor-filled antics. Cudi took over the bandleader and sidekick duties from comedian Reggie Watts who then became the bandleader for The Late Late Show with James Corden. Knowing that Cudi had this experience, there’s no doubt that he understands how to thrive in humor-filled settings and knows how to navigate even the most off-beat humor.

With all of this experience, I have no doubt that Cudi will easily be able to give not only a high-impact musical performance but also show off his comedic skills in a sketch or two.
