Stephen Colbert is Lex Luthor in new Justice League cut
By Matt Moore
Zack Snyder’s Justice League gave fans what they wanted, restoring director Zack Snyder’s version of the movie in all its superhero glory. But one fan wasn’t completely satisfied with what he saw on HBO Max: Stephen Colbert.
The Snyder Cut of Justice League has impressed both critics and fans alike, effectively making obsolete the 2017 version of the film revised by director Joss Whedon. Now a new campaign is underway to return the keys to the DC Extended Universe to Snyder so he can complete his vision for Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of the Justice League.
According to reports, that probably won’t happen. Fans will have to just imagine where the story could have gone and what the actors could have done in their iconic roles. Or, they can let Stephen Colbert do the imagining.
The Late Show put together its own cut of a tense scene from Zack Snyder’s Justice League featuring Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke and Stephen Colbert stepping in for Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. Check out the clip below:
Stephen Colbert can’t keep his supervillains straight in Justice League parody
A bald Stephen Colbert looks a bit more like the classic version of Lex Luthor that general audiences are used to seeing. But while the late night comedian has the look down, he isn’t quite as menacing as Jesse Eisenberg.
It doesn’t help that Colbert-as-Luthor can’t keep his villains straight. Deathstroke, Deadpool, and Deadshot all blend into one in Colbert’s Justice League parody. For casual fans, it something they can certainly relate to considering the similar-sounding names and big screen costumes worn by Joe Manganiello, Ryan Reynolds, and Will Smith.
Die-hard comic book fans will be quick to point out that Marvel’s Deadpool borrowed heavily from DC’s Deathstroke. But the point is lost on Colbert’s Luthor who is far more distracted by Deathstroke fighting “children.” Maybe a Joe Manganiello-led Deathstroke solo film would clear things up for Colbert.
