Andy Samberg derails Colin Jost’s interview with Seth Meyers
By Matt Moore
It was a mini Saturday Night Live reunion last night on Late Night with Seth Meyers when Andy Samberg inserted himself into Colin Jost’s interview with Seth Meyers. And things never really got back on track after the interruption.
Dropped connections and interruptions come with the territory when dealing with Zoom for interviews and meetings. In the past year, just about everyone has had their struggles with video conferencing and trying to eliminate distractions while working.
Late night TV has also been doing its best to navigate Zoom. After some early struggles, like Seth Meyers delivering an echo-y monologue from a hallway, things have turned around with some shows using Zoom to their advantage.
But there are some things that you just can’t prepare for. Case in point: Andy Samberg texting an interview guest and holding up the interview. That’s what happened last night on Late Night with Seth Meyers when Samberg found out that SNL’s Colin Jost was the guest.
Colin Jost was on Late Night to promote his new movie Tom & Jerry, coming to theaters and HBO Max on Feb. 26. The comedian also discussed how strange it is to have no SNL after-parties in the age of COVID-19 as well as how the pandemic affected his wedding with Scarlett Johansson.
Then came the news that Andy Samberg had some advice for Jost. It derailed the interview as Jost was forced to turn off his camera and scroll through Samberg’s texts.
Those texts ranged from friendly advice to the absurd in typical Samberg fashion. Late Night with Seth Meyers fans appreciated Samberg working in another insult about Frisbee, Meyers’ dog and Samberg’s least favorite thing in the world.
Colin Jost’s interview with Seth Meyers never got back on track after Andy Samberg crashed it
Seth Meyers did his best to recover from Andy Samberg’s interruption but the interview with Colin Jost stayed pretty goofy for the remainder.
Meyers brought up the fact that Jost lived in the same dorm as Pete Buttigieg at Harvard while also noting that Jost played Buttigieg in a couple of Saturday Night Live sketches. Buttigieg’s new job as Transportation Secretary seemed to hit a nerve with Jost who questioned what exactly Buttigieg will be doing besides “railroads.”
Fans watching at home probably weren’t all that upset with the way the interview turned out. SNL fans have always enjoyed seeing the interactions among their favorite cast members and writers outside of the show. The group of Seth Meyers, Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, Colin Jost, and John Mulaney always get a strong reaction when they get together, whether for a planned event or when one wants to crash another’s interview.
