Schitt’s Creek co-creator Eugene Levy has never hosted Saturday Night Live

Eugene Levy’s career in comedy spans 50 years, meaning he is beloved by multiple generations of fans. No matter where you know Levy from, you know he is a hilarious performer.

Some know Levy from his run on SCTV, others for his work in Christopher Guest’s mockumentaries. Younger audiences appreciate Levy for his work in the American Pie franchise and now as the Emmy-winning star and co-creator of Schitt’s Creek.

Given that Levy has been making audiences laugh since 1969, it is surprising to hear that he has never hosted Saturday Night Live. But it’s not a case of SNL never inviting Levy to Studio 8H.

Levy was booked to host the March 9, 1985 show during season 10. He was set to co-host it with fellow SCTV star John Candy. However, the episode was canceled due to a writers’ strike. The strike only lasted two weeks but it was enough to nix Levy and Candy’s SNL hosting debut.

The duo had actually appeared on the special “SNL Film Festival” episode that aired on March 2, 1985. They were promoting their upcoming episode but as fate would have it, it was their only chance on Saturday Night Live. SNL referenced the cameo while promoting Dan Levy’s turn as host in Feb. 2021.

But Dan Levy isn’t the only Schitt’s Creek star to host Saturday Night Live even if his father hasn’t. In fact, one cast member has done it twice as part of a complicated history with SNL.
