By Matt Moore
Here’s who fans should be excited to see on late night TV this week
Late night TV is back this week for another big week of shows. While many fans will be focused on monologues and reactions to the news, the guests coming to late night this week are could make their own headlines.
Fans should also be excited to know that late night TV is back in full force this week. After taking an extended break, Conan returns with brand new episodes this week. And of course, the big three of The Tonight Show, The Late Show, and Jimmy Kimmel Live! are back as well.
President Donald Trump’s final days in office and the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden will get a lot of air time. The event will inspire some of the guest choices this week as hosts close the book on an indescribable chapter in American history, not to mention in late night TV.
With that in mind, here are Last Night On’s picks for fives guests to watch this week. Be sure to let us know who you’re excited to see.
Late night TV guests to watch: Dua Lipa
Jimmy Kimmel Live! starts its week by welcoming back a friend of the show. Catch music star Dua Lipa on Monday, Jan. 18.
Lipa has a long history with Jimmy Kimmel already. As you can see in the video above, she’s one of a handful of pop stars who have pranked Kimmel by waking him up in the middle of the night. And over the summer, Lipa filled in as a guest host while Kimmel was on vacation.
On Monday night, things will be back to normal with Lipa connecting with Kimmel for an interview. It’s been a busy year for the singer thanks in part to her incredibly popular album Future Nostalgia and singles like “Levitating.” The singer recently confirmed that B-sides from the album are on the way so we may get an official announcement on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday night.
Late night TV guests to watch: Aubrey Plaza
Aubrey Plaza is always entertaining when she stops by late night TV. Expect more of the same when she’s on Conan Tuesday, Jan. 19.
Plaza may claim that she is a terrible late night guest but her reasons could actually be why she’s so popular with fans. If her past appearances on Conan are any indication, Tuesday’s show should another hilarious conversation.
Plaza’s latest film is Black Bear. The thriller was released in Dec. 2020 and has received some impressive reviews, especially when it comes to Plaza’s performance. Expect the actress to discuss the film more with Conan O’Brien on Tuesday.
Late night TV guests to watch: Dakota Johnson
Another popular actress known for memorable late night TV appearances makes the list. Watch Dakota Johnson on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Tuesday, Jan. 19.
Johnson may have gained mainstream attention with her role in the 50 Shades film series but she has gone on to appear in a wide variety of movies since then. On late night TV, her easy-going approach and sense of humor have won her even more fans.
Her latest film is Our Friend co-starring Casey Affleck and Jason Segel. It is set to be released on Jan. 22.
Late night TV guests to watch: John Oliver
Wednesday, Jan. 20 will be a historic day. To recap the day’s events, Jimmy Kimmel Live! will welcome John Oliver.
Oliver has been on hiatus from Last Week Tonight since the end of November. But season 8 is on the way, as HBO recently announced a Feb. 14 start date.
Expect Oliver to share some of his thoughts on everything that has gone on since he went off the air. He and Kimmel may also discuss what late night TV will look and sound like moving forward, now that President Trump isn’t providing daily material.
Late night TV guests to watch: Hosts of Pod Save America
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert should be must-see TV on Jan. 20, too. The CBS late night show will feature the hosts of the podcast “Pod Save America” Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor.
Colbert has made it clear he’s excited to say goodbye to President Trump. The “Pod Save America” hosts are in the same boat. But like Colbert, they know that there are still plenty of problems in D.C. and the GOP that need to be fixed.
It should be an insightful conversation on Wednesday as Favreau, Lovett, and Vietor try to put the past four years and the past three weeks into perspective.
