The Jerry Seinfeld Challenge and Jimmy Fallon’s impression took center stage on The Tonight Show

Last night’s special Thanksgiving edition of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon was all about Jerry Seinfeld. Or more specifically, all about impressions of Jerry Seinfeld.

Seinfeld checked in with The Tonight Show to promote his book Is This Anything? that contains every joke he has performed since the 1970s. And with so much of that material appearing on different incarnations of The Tonight Show, it was only right that the comedian visited the NBC late night show on Thursday.

Fans are very familiar with Jimmy Fallon’s impression of Jerry Seinfeld. It helped the comedian land a spot in the cast of Saturday Night Live and he incorporated the impression into a number of sketches. Since then, Fallon has continued to dust off his Seinfeld voice for Tonight Show bits and just about anytime he talks with the man himself.

Last night, Seinfeld weighed in on Fallon’s impression once again. The stand-up legend thinks it’s time for Fallon to evolve:

According to Seinfeld, Jimmy Fallon is stuck in the “1985 comedy club Jerry” era. But as Is This Anything? proves, Jerry Seinfeld has been around for a very long time. His delivery has changed a bit so Fallon’s impression needs to be updated as well.

Seinfeld challenged Fallon to do something new with his impression. We didn’t have to wait long to see what the Tonight Show host came up with.

Jerry Seinfeld and Jimmy Fallon picked the winners of the Seinfeld Challenge

Last week, The Tonight Show announced “The Seinfeld Challenge.” It asked fans to record themselves delivering material found in Jerry Seinfeld’s book. They weren’t looking for impressions but rather who could put their own twist on the bits.

Last night, we got to see three finalists as well as Fallon submit his entry. Check it out below and decide for yourself who the winner was:

Last Night On’s vote would have gone to France’s Magda Mihaila for “Mad Cow.” Standing in a field surrounded by cows really brought home the point made by Seinfeld’s routine.

But in the end, the winner was Ashley Gutermuth and her rendition of “Talk Show Hosts.” We have to defer to Jerry Seinfeld as the Jerry Seinfeld expert and trust his judgment.

Seinfeld also looked like he was pleased with how Jimmy Fallon brought his impression up to the 21st century. We’ll have to wait and see if Fallon sticks with it or reverts back to ’80s Jerry the next time he wants to do the voice.
