Stephen Colbert reacted to reports that Republicans are worried about the negative effects of President Trump’s debate performance

Reports indicate that several Republicans found President Donald Trump’s debate performance embarrassing, awful, and damaging to his reelection chances. Last night on The Late Show, an amused Stephen Colbert wondered what took the GOP so long to come around on their leader.

According to reports from CNN and The Washington Post, President Trump’s aggressive behavior in his debate against former Vice President Joe Biden has made the GOP fearful about next month’s election. It’s clear that any preparation and coaching President Trump went through was tossed out the window once moderator Chris Wallace started asking questions.

Stephen Colbert was among those who relentlessly ridiculed President Trump for his outbursts on the debate stage. The Late Show host went on to call the president a “giant baby” in what was a comparatively mild insult by the comedian’s standards.

On Thursday night, Colbert’s monologue continued to cover the debate fallout. He had no sympathy for the Republican Party who may finally be second-guessing the decision to back Donald Trump as the leader of their party.

Colbert rattled off several examples of when Republicans could have withdrawn support from President Trump, including his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, his comments disparaging fallen soldiers, and his tax avoidance. But apparently being a bully at the debate was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

The one person who did approve of President Trump’s debate antics was President Trump. As always, the president gave himself rave reviews despite reports that his party wasn’t exactly celebrating.

Stephen Colbert says that President Trump has a reason to be nervous

The Late Show has noticed that President Trump plays extra fast and loose with reality whenever he’s under pressure. So the most recent poll numbers indicating that Vice President Biden has a healthy lead may be why President Trump doubled down on his debate performance.

Colbert cites a report that backs up his theory on what motivates the president to turn up his brash behavior and try to control everything around him. So like the GOP, all indications are that President Trump is also scared of what is coming in the election.

It’s a much different attitude for Stephen Colbert. The comedian seems genuinely amused by watching the president and his allies squirm after being exposed on the debate stage. It’s another step closer to Colbert’s wish for a change in the White House and the end of monologues on Donald Trump.
