Stephen Colbert: How Trump wants you to ignore reality
By Matt Moore
Stephen Colbert called President Donald Trump’s latest actions a disregard for the truth
For the past four years, supporters and opponents of President Donald Trump have appeared to be living in two different worlds. That is all part of the plan, says Stephen Colbert. He explained how President Trump hopes Americans will ignore reality last night on The Late Show.
Whether it is his impeachment, weather patterns, or the novel coronavirus, it’s clear that President Trump operates under his own set of facts. It has been everything from comical to depressing for Colbert.
The latest example came in two different forms. First, it was President Donald Trump’s town hall meeting with voters in Pennsylvania. Many considered it a shaky performance by the president, highlighted by his attempt to blame former Vice President Joe Biden for not implementing a national mask mandate during the current pandemic.
Then there were President Trump’s actions on Twitter. He has never been hesitant to share questionable content. But with the election less than two months away, extra attention is on what @realdonaldtrump tweets about Vice President Biden.
Stephen Colbert used Wednesday night’s monologue to once again address President Trump’s relationship with the truth and facts exemplified by these two incidents. The goal, according to Colbert, is that ignoring reality will earn the president his reelection.
Stephen Colbert says President Trump will lie to anyone about anything
It’s not often that President Trump has been face-to-face with voters outside one of his MAGA rallies. Yet at the town hall event on ABC, he found himself facing undecided voters who were willing to press the president on the pandemic response, systemic racism, healthcare, and more.
The result is that President Trump did not hesitate to lie to these voters, argues Stephen Colbert. The Late Show host quickly reminds his audience that President Trump is on tape admitting to downplaying COVID-19 yet the president told a voter in Pennsylvania that he “up-played” it. Colbert counts President Trump’s comments on a potential vaccine as another lie to voters.
Next, Colbert addressed the doctored video that President Trump shared via his Twitter account. The comedian jokes that the attempt to disparage Vice President Biden actually backfired. But again, it’s an example of President Trump manipulating the truth for his own political gain.
So whether it is President Trump’s record in office, his own comments, or the actions of his political opponents, he’s willing to lie or twist the truth says Colbert. It’s another reason why The Late Show host is pushing for Americans to get out and vote in the election.
