HBO announced a new deal with Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. HBO announced that it has renewed its late-night show for three more seasons.

HBO Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys shared the news today in a press release. Last Week Tonight will remain on the air until at least 2023 thanks to the new agreement.

The renewal comes during season 7 of the Emmy Award-winning show. John Oliver has been better than ever this season as he tackles issues related to the novel coronavirus pandemic, racial justice, and any other topic that piques his interest.

Last Week Tonight‘s performance during these past few months of uncertainly likely made an already easy decision simpler for HBO. Oliver reacted to his new deal in typical fashion, releasing the following statement:

"We’re all extremely happy to be able to continue to do our show on HBO for another three years, or until the end of the world, whichever comes first."

It was likely an easy decision for Oliver to re-up with HBO as well. The schedule for Last Week Tonight isn’t nearly as grueling as nightly late-night shows. Oliver also is free to do basically whatever he wants and doesn’t have to deal with celebrity interviews or having Last Week Tonight used as a marketing tool for others’ projects.

Oliver and his writers continue to take advantage of this by delivering content that audiences worldwide consume. Yes, it’s a late-night comedy show but Last Week Tonight has gone well beyond the genre in its history and the past five months have been the best example of the show’s impact, influence, and importance.

When does Last Week Tonight with John Oliver return?

The announcement of a new deal for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver comes during a hiatus for the show. Fans likely noticed that Oliver was absent last night.

The show has set a Sept. 27 return date. That will kick off the final stretch run of season seven which should wrap up in mid-Nov. after the presidential election.

In the meantime, fans can continue to revisit classic clips from John Oliver. The Last Week Tonight YouTube channel has a collection of main stories. Full episodes are available to HBO and HBO Max subscribers.
