Get ready for the return of NFL football with these Saturday Night Live sketches

It’s the first Sunday of the 2020 NFL season and it couldn’t come at a better time. America’s favorite sport is back and what better way to celebrate than to start the day with a little football fun courtesy of Saturday Night Live.

Like everything else in pop cultureSaturday Night Live has parodied football and the NFL countless times over the years. It’s also had some help from some of the game’s biggest names like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and J.J. Watt.

Given everything that has gone on in 2020, the NFL is a welcomed distraction for some and a for others, a reminder of life’s simpler pleasures. Late-night fans will feel the same when Saturday Night Live returns next month. So Last Night On is bringing the best of both worlds together by highlighting these classic sketches.

Saturday Night Live’s best sketch featuring an NFL player

We could have gone with Joe Montana and Walter Payton squaring off against the Church Lady. But when it comes to Saturday Night Live‘s best sketch featuring an NFL player, it’s hard to be Peyton Manning and this parody of the United Way.

It hit at the perfect time. “Digital Shorts” were a massive hit on SNL and Manning was already everywhere in commercials. This sketch showed off a very different side of Manning and proved that his sense of humor went much different than what fans were used to seeing.

Saturday Night Live’s best sketch about football fans

There are some recent sketches that could be in the running for this category. Most notably, the Totinos collection has earned itself something of a cult following thanks to Vanessa Bayer feeding her hungry guys.

Still, nothing beats the original football fan sketch. “Bill Swerski’s Super Fans” is an all-time recurring sketch and perhaps the best thing SNL has done with regards to sports. Whether you root for da Bears or not, you can appreciate Swerski and the fellas from Chicago.

Saturday Night Live’s best parody of football players

Few NFL storylines have crossed over into the mainstream quite like “Deflategate” a few years ago. That was due to a combination of a ridiculous story as well as Tom Brady and the New England Patriots being at the center of controversy…again.

It’s hard to think of a more divisive team than the Patriots. Outside of New England, they’re among the most hated teams in all of sports. So fans in 44 other states were more than happy to laugh along with this parody of Brady and his deflated balls.
