Seth Meyers reacted to President Trump’s rally in North Carolina with A Closer Look

If you watch and listen to President Donald Trump, you may think that the pandemic was a thing of the past. Why else would the president hold a rally in North Carolina? Seth Meyers had the answer last night in “A Closer Look.”

The scene in North Carolina on Tuesday night looked like a typical Trump rally. His supporters gathered shoulder to shoulder holding signs and waving flags. It would be just another day in office for President Trump if it weren’t in the middle of a pandemic.

Tuesday’s rally was in clear violation of social distancing recommendations. And a number of rally attendees were without a mask even as the U.S. death toll from COVID-19 continues to climb.

Critics called the rally irresponsible and an unnecessary risk. To understand why President Trump went ahead with the campaign event, you only need to listen to Seth Meyers in “A Closer Look” as he reveals the one motivating factor for President Trump:

Meyers would much rather spend “A Closer Look” fact-checking President Trump and calling him out over things like the border wall. We’ve seen the Late Night host do it time and time again. But this installment takes on a different message because of how irresponsible Meyers finds it to hold a rally during a pandemic.

He reminds his audience that President Trump’s June rally in Tulsa likely led to a spike in novel coronavirus cases. Then he points out that journalist Bob Woodward has tapes of President Trump confessing to downplaying COVID-19 despite knowing how deadly it could be.

A Closer Look once again calls President Trump desperate ahead of the election

For Seth Meyers, the only explanation is desperation. President Trump is trailing former Vice President Joe Biden in nearly every poll, the pandemic response has been a disaster, and there are few if any policy ideas that the president can campaign on.

Desperation has been a common theme in “A Closer Look” for the past few months. Meyers continually points to it as the driving factor behind every decision from President Trump and his Republican allies.

The type of desperation driving the Trump campaign isn’t going to change anything in Meyers’ eyes. The comedian has appeared increasingly confident that President Trump’s time in office is drawing to a close no matter how desperate he gets.
