What should Last Week Tonight with John Oliver fans expect to see tonight?

It’s Sunday, the weekend is wrapping up, and with it, the month of August is drawing to a close. It’s a time when many people try to fit in one last summer vacation. Late-night television is no different so what does that mean for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver?

Since June, the HBO show hasn’t exactly been on a consistent weekly schedule. There were two episodes in July and so far only two episodes in August.

It’s a pattern we’ve seen elsewhere in late-night television. Shows like Conan have been taking time off while others like The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon have been delivering new episodes this past week.

So what’s next for Last Week Tonight? Will John Oliver and company take the night off or can fans expect a brand new show?

The answer: a brand new episode. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver will be new tonight and air at 11:00 PM ET on HBO.

What will be the main story on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver?

Last week’s main story examined how systemic racism affects jury selection and jury duty. It was another segment on a common theme during season seven of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver that has come to the forefront since due to the George Floyd protests.

Earlier in that episode, Oliver discussed the conspiracy theory movement QAnon. It’s a subject that deserves a full segment devoted to it given how it has infiltrated the Republican Party. But given he touched on it last week, don’t expect a full break down tonight.

If attention turns back to the novel coronavirus pandemic, then Oliver still has a couple of angles left to consider. A look at how a return to schools and colleges could affect the spread of COVID-19 feels overdue.

Russia has been back in the news over the past couple of weeks. Last Week Tonight could unpack the latest report on Russian interference in the 2016 election from the Senate panel. Then there was the alleged poisoning of Russian activist Alexei Navalny. That story may have broken too late for Oliver and his writers to get into tonight, however.

Fans know to expect the unexpected when it comes to the main story on Last Week Tonight. The best option remains to wait and see.
