Stephen Colbert on what makes Joe Biden presidential

Stephen Colbert recapped the final night of the Democratic National Convention
The Democratic National Convention and its underlying message of hope were exactly what Stephen Colbert needed to get out of the fog of 2020. The Late Show host was once again live after the DNC and delivered a ringing endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden.
After just the first night of the DNC, Colbert expressed a feeling of hopefulness that he hadn’t had since 2016. And while he teased Democrats like former President Bill Clinton, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Senator Bernie Sanders, Colbert made sure to echo their message on change for the sake of American democracy.
Former President Barack Obama’s speech on Wednesday night had Colbert fired up. But Vice President Biden’s address on Thursday had the comedian ready to hit the streets for the Democratic nominee.
Before he got to Vice President Biden’s speech and offered his own commentary, Colbert had to get through one more night of jokes at Democrats’ expense. It wasn’t easy following DNC emcee Julia Louis-Dreyfus but Colbert showed once again why The Late Show is on top of late-night.
Stephen Colbert delivered a heartfelt assessment of Joe Biden’s character
The Late Show‘s coverage of the Democratic National Convention was a reminder of what politics on late-night television used to be before the age of Donald Trump. Jokes were about awkward moments, politicians trying too hard to be relatable, and whatever it was Michael Bloomberg was trying to do.
But for the past four years, Colbert has been intertwining his jokes with warnings, public service announcements, and moments of despair. However, the Late Show host seems to think change is on the horizon as evidenced by his more upbeat and optimistic attitude over the past week.
When it came time to pause the jokes and speak about former Vice President Joe Biden, Stephen Colbert delivered a heartfelt message endorsing the Democratic nominee. The two have a shared experience when it comes to grief and loss–something Colbert sees as an asset in a future president.
It’s hard to think of an example of someone who had the same things to say about President Trump as Colbert had to say about Vice President Biden. Colbert’s words are worth reprinting because the hopeful tone hasn’t been around much on The Late Show.
"This evening Joe Biden showed himself to be a man who is decent, compassionate, flawed but honest. And that is water in the desert. He’s the sort of person who thinks before says things and when he gaffes, which he does often, it’s because his heart gets ahead of his words. He cares. And he tries his hardest. He’s like a lot of people I know and you do too. Which shouldn’t seem remarkable but right now, it is. And when Trump tweets his all-caps rebuke tomorrow morning, it’s just going to show how our president is not presidential. But Joe Biden is."
