Stephen Colbert called President Trump’s attack on the USPS a bold move

President Donald Trump’s campaign to discredit and disrupt the U.S. Postal Service took a new turn yesterday. The president made it clear that he was withholding funding in order to curb mail-in voting. For Stephen Colbert, it is one of President Trump’s boldest moves yet since taking office.

It was in a Fox News interview that President Trump tied USPS funding to mail-in voting. He stated he didn’t want the desperately-needed funds to approved because they would be used for mail-in voting, part of his ongoing claims that election fraud is guaranteed.

Many who heard the interview were surprised to hear President Trump say this out loud. The motivation was obvious but to hear the president directly tie funding to voting was unexpected.

Stephen Colbert was among those caught off guard by the comments. After teasing the bombshells in Michael Cohen’s upcoming book, Colbert focused on the bombshell comments from President Trump.

Stephen Colbert called out Post Master General Louis DeJoy

Stephen Colbert knows that President Donald Trump is rarely acting alone when a controversial decision or policy is put into place. That’s why the Late Show host quickly turned his attention to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy.

DeJoy donated to President Trump’s campaign in 2016 and was rewarded with the USPS decision despite a lack of experience and possible conflicts of interest. Here, Colbert is focused on the ways DeJoy has restructured the Post Office and found ways to delay mail delivery.

Colbert makes it clear that the public shouldn’t buy excuses from DeJoy or President Trump about why cuts are being made at the Post Office. And we don’t even have to take it from Colbert as the comedian reminds viewers that President Trump admitted to his plan on Fox News.

Colbert’s advice to President Trump? Don’t say the cheating part out loud. For everyone else, the Late Show host hopes that post offices are defended the same way firearms are considering both are protected in the Constitution. Given the way the administration is falling in line behind President Trump, that sounds unlikely. But it won’t stop Stephen Colbert from doing what he can to uphold democracy as he sees it.
