Fans will see something different tonight on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

The long wait is finally over. After a two-week break, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is back tonight and with its return comes a new look for the late-night show.

Fans always notice when The Late Show goes missing for any length of time. Stephen Colbert has become the go-to voice in late-night television when fans want to hear a reaction or get a laugh during uncertain times.

So the past two weeks haven’t been easy for fans. Making the wait seem even longer was the wealth of material that came from the headlines. Audiences could only imagine what Colbert would have to say about President Donald Trump’s Axios interview or struggling through the pronunciation of “Yosemite.”

Regardless of what is in the news, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert returns to CBS tonight to start a week of brand new shows. Production is moving out of Colbert’s house and back into the building where his studio is located.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert won’t air from the Ed Sullivan Theater

Just because The Late Show is back in the building, it doesn’t mean the show will broadcast from the Ed Sullivan Theater like normal. Stephen Colbert made it clear that they won’t be returning to the iconic theater and that was backed up by CBS’s chief executive officer last week.

Other late-night shows have left home for a new location. Conan did multiple weeks at the Largo theater in Los Angeles while The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon returned to 30 Rock.

By the sounds of it, The Late Show doesn’t want to run things from a nearly empty Ed Sullivan Theater. But if Colbert and likely a smaller crew and staff are in the building, what will they do? They could look back to the early days of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Longtime viewers may recall that when he first got the gig, Colbert released a number of videos from his office. If The Late Show want to maintain the same vibe as the at-home episodes, having Colbert sitting behind his desk at the office would be the way to go.

It also wouldn’t be the first time Colbert’s office has been used even after the Ed Sullivan Theater was transformed. First, there was his “pretend office” that was put together to cover late-breaking news ahead of the 2016 election:

Then Colbert’s office showed up again in 2018. After President Trump had some disparaging words about late-night television comedians, Colbert checked in with his friends from his office at The Late Show.

It seems like revisiting this set is the most likely decision for The Late Show. Then again, it could be a different, smaller studio in the building that better suits the show’s needs. We’ll find out tonight when the show airs at 11:35 PM ET on CBS. Tonight’s guests are Dr. Jonathan LaPook and Maroon 5.
