Seth Meyers used a favorite Saturday Night Live bit on Late Night

It is no secret that Seth Meyers took a lot of what he learned from Saturday Night Live to his gig hosting Late Night. That also included a few bits like “Really!?!” which Meyers dusted off on Tuesday night but with a very different co-host.

Meyers sat behind the “Weekend Update” desk at Saturday Night Live from 2006 to 2014. His success there is part of the reason Lorne Michaels selected Meyers to succeed Jimmy Fallon as host of Late Night.

Among the most popular running gags during Meyers’s tenure was “Really!?! with Seth and Amy” in which Meyers and co-anchor Amy Poehler try to wrap their heads around a particular story. Meyers continued the bit even after Poehler left the show but was occasionally joined by her on SNL and then on Late Night.

“Really!?!” returned on Tuesday night but it wasn’t the “Weekend Update” reunion that fans would expect. Instead, Meyers turned to a new co-host for the segment; someone who has been a divisive figure among Late Night viewers.

Seth Meyers has made the Sea Captain late-night TV’s latest sidekick superstar

Just about every late-night host has a sidekick. Conan O’Brien has Andy Richter, Jimmy Fallon has Steve Higgins, and Seth Meyers has typically been able to rely on Fred Armisen. But quarantine and lockdown have thrown a wrench in things. Meyers has had to improvise to find a comedy partner to play off of. Enter the Sea Captain.

If you’ve been watching Late Night since Seth Meyers moved from his attic to his in-law’s house, then you’ve seen plenty of the Sea Captain. The painting frequently chimes in during “A Closer Look” whether Meyers wants it or not or whether fans at home approve.

The news that Norway’s cruise lines were back up and running amid the pandemic was just too perfect not to include the Sea Captain. The story is ideal for a “Really!?!” segment and anything set on the ocean right now has to include a nod to Late Night‘s new sidekick.

Fans have begun to speculate about who is behind the Sea Captain’s voice. The leading contender right now is Will Forte. Forte and Meyers are close friends dating back to their time at Saturday Night Live together and the character seems right up Forte’s alley. If that is the case, we’ll surely find out the next time Forte sits down for a Late Night interview.
