Stephen Colbert condemned President Trump’s use of federal agents in Portland

There have been countless occasions when Stephen Colbert has condemned President Donald Trump and demonstrated genuine shock. But The Late Show host has now seen the darkest point yet in the form of federal agents arresting protestors in Portland, Oregon.

Over the past four years, Colbert has called out President Trump for just about everything. Insulting and bullying people, denigrating the press, praising authoritarian leaders, promoting conspiracy theories and racist rhetoric, and abdicating his duties as a leader are just some of the reasons President Trump has found himself the subject of a Stephen Colbert monologue.

The situation in Portland is the darkest and perhaps most disturbing to Colbert. After weeks of protests for social justice, President Trump sent federal agents to Portland. The result has been a crackdown on peaceful protests, arrests without explanation, and the presence of unidentified law enforcement agents intimidating protestors.

Colbert commented on the story during Monday night’s episode of The Late Show. He shared what he called “horrifying” footage of the Portland protests before offering his thoughts.

Stephen Colbert says President Donald Trump is behind everything in Portland

Unmarked vans pulling up and grabbing protestors off the street and driving away is a scary scene no matter where it happens. But Stephen Colbert is disturbed to see it happening here in the U.S. and specifically in Portland.

The agents making these arrests are from the U.S. Marshals Special Operations Group and from the Custom and Border Protection’s Border Patrol Tactical Unit. Those names don’t sound like the agencies that should be monitoring protests in Oregon. But as Colbert pointed out, they are following executive orders meaning that President Trump has directed their actions in Portland.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler also called out President Trump. Mayor Wheeler suggested that the president is attempting to appear strong to his base by cracking down on protestors in an effort to improve his poor poll numbers. Colbert is worried that if this is true, President Trump will look to replicate the situation in other cities like Chicago and New York.

Colbert doesn’t sound all that optimistic that anything can be done to stop federal agents from following President Trump’s orders in any city. The sole hope appears to be the mobilization of moms to stand up against the secret police. If that’s true, it is even more reason to follow Colbert’s advice and call your mother.
