Seth Meyers took A Closer Look at President Donald Trump’s plan for schools

Other than providing material for Late Night, there is nothing that Seth Meyers trusts President Donald Trump with doing. So it is no surprise that Meyers railed against President Trump’s push for schools to reopen this fall regardless of the pandemic. The president’s plan, or lack thereof, was the subject of Monday’s “A Closer Look.”

President Trump’s record on the novel coronavirus can be described as “dangerously optimistic” at best. He has a demonstrated history of dismissing the severity of COVID-19, its spread across the country, and the advice of medical experts. The president’s perspective is that his re-election chances are directly tied to how quickly life can get back to “normal” and any means will justify that end.

A major aspect of getting life back to normal will be the reopening of schools in the fall. But that ideal scenario is difficult to achieve when cases are spiking in several states and the nature of schools contradicts guidelines on how to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Despite this, President Trump is fixated on schools being open for the new school year. However, this goal comes without a real plan says Seth Meyers. The Late Night host made the case for why Americans should not trust the president to safely reopen schools during Monday’s “A Closer Look.”

A Closer Look argues Trump’s failures have made reopening schools nearly impossible

Seth Meyers never holds back when discussing President Donald Trump in “A Closer Look.” The Late Night host has called the president corrupt, challenged his mental capacity, and referred to him as a sociopath. So it was no surprise to see Meyers demonstrate zero restraint in assessing President Trump’s handling of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Meyers argues that the U.S. has become an international embarrassment during the country. While other nations are fully reopened and citizens are enjoying group activities, states in the U.S. have seen COVID-19 cases spike while millions of Americans remain unemployed and unable to make housing payments.

So given this evidence, there is no way Meyers can trust President Trump to do the right thing when it comes to reopening schools in the fall. Months of ignoring health experts and rushing people back to work have created an unsafe environment for children in schools. Meyers says President Trump is ignoring this fact and how much of the blame lies with him.

And it is not just President Trump who has failed to instill trust in Americans when it comes to schools. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was destroyed for her CNN interview in which it was clear there is no concrete plan other than “kids need to be in school.” This was followed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis suggesting that if a hardware store can open during a pandemic, so too can a school.

Seth Meyers suggests that it is more evidence of a “sociopathic political movement” protecting President Trump. Meyers argues that the president’s incompetence is on full display with the issue of reopening schools yet the Republican Party is willing to defend him. It’s easy to see why Meyers doesn’t trust anyone in the government especially when it comes to the safety of children in schools.
