Rob Lowe shared a classic Chris Farley story with Conan O’Brien

There has never been a bad time to share a Chris Farley story nor does there ever have to be a reason to share one. And for those who knew and worked with the Saturday Night Live icon, there are no shortage of tales to share.

Rob Lowe co-starred with Farley and David Spade in the 1995 comedy Tommy Boy. The cult classic was Farley’s first major role after a string of credits in movies featuring other SNL cast members and alumni including Wayne’s WorldConeheads, and Billy Madison.

Between Saturday Night Live, Black Sheep, and Tommy Boy, Spade has more Farley stories than anyone. These stories include one about their time spent filming Tommy Boy and fighting for Lowe’s attention.

On Tuesday night, it was Lowe’s turn to share a classic Farley story during his appearance on Conan. Lowe recalled the first time he met Farley and why the comedy legend’s eating habits stick with Lowe even today.

Chris Farley stories continue to be a late night television staple

Rob Lowe was interviewed by Conan O’Brien to prompt his new podcast “Literally! with Rob Lowe.” There wasn’t any particular reason for O’Brien to bring up Chris Farley except for the fact that both he and Lowe worked with Farley. But in late night television, any chance to share a story about the late comedian is taken.

Lowe’s story about Farley buttering (both) his steaks offers another small glimpse into who Farley was as a person and how strong of an impression he made on those around him. Late night television fans have seen countless other examples over the years through stories by David Spade, Adam Sandler, Bob Odenkirk, and many others.

Now thanks to Lowe’s story, there will be Chris Farley fans out there who wonder if they should put a hat on their steak every time they go to take a bite from now on. It’s hard to imagine another entertainer that can still have that kind of influence.
