1. A Closer Look at President Trump’s post-impeachment press conference

There have not been many wins for President Donald Trump in 2020. His responses to the novel coronavirus pandemic and civil unrest have been heavily criticized. Former members of his administration and family members are releasing tell-all books. And investigative reporters have uncovered yet another scandal involving Russia.

It’s a far cry from the start of the year when President Trump was basking in the glow of his impeachment acquittal. His Republican allies voted against impeachment over the Ukraine quid pro quo story, giving President Trump a chance to celebrate his victory.

The acquittal certainly didn’t surprise Seth Meyers. “A Closer Look” made that clear during the trial as Meyers continually condemned Republicans for turning a blind eye in favor of partisan politics. He described it as a “cover-up” and reminded GOP members that history wouldn’t be kind to those who stood by President Trump. In this edition of “A Closer Look,” Meyers once again ripped Republicans and especially those more concerned with re-election than rule of law.

The highlight was how Meyers reacted to President Trump’s press conference. Feeling confident after being acquitted, President Trump felt free to air his grievances regardless of the audience or setting. 2020 has seen “A Closer Look” use more words like “deranged” to describe the president’s behavior and his worldview while in office. That’s exactly how Late Night framed the press conference and has continued to describe the president this way ever since.
