Stephen Colbert says Trump’s executive order is nothing to get excited about

After weeks of doing nothing to address any of the issues raised by protests around the country, President Donald Trump finally did something in his capacity as president of the United States. However, his executive order on police reform didn’t go far enough according to critics like Stephen Colbert.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has been among several late night shows that have called out President Trump for his response to the Black Lives Matter movement. Things reached a low point when demonstrators were forcibly removed to make way for a photo-op outside a church near the White House.

So on Tuesday the Trump administration took a tangible step forward. President Trump met with family members of individuals killed by police shootings. He signed an executive order creating a national database of police misconduct and promising federal grant money to improve police training.

Stephen Colbert’s monologue quickly proved that he wasn’t a massive fan of the executive order. He explained why it is toothless and called out President Trump for immediately contradicting himself and forgetting his promises.

Stephen Colbert doesn’t think Trump is taking the situation seriously

According to some family members who met with President Trump on Tuesday, he was willing to listen and took the time to address everyone in the room. They also said that they wanted to see action and not just hear kind words.

For Colbert, President Trump immediately reversed course on any pledge he made to those families. His monologue suggests that the president couldn’t even remember what they talked about or what promises were made.

This theme continues as Colbert criticizes the vague language used around cooperation between mental health professionals and police officers, the loophole on chokehold, and the flowery adjectives President Trump used to describe “justice.” Added together, Colbert concludes that the executive order is nothing more than an empty gesture.
