Conan O’Brien and Team Coco will play a big part in HBO Max’s comedy collection.
HBO Max is ready to jump into the streaming service race and it is counting on a late night television icon to help. Conan O’Brien is set to play a major role in bringing quality comedy to the brand new service.
HBO Max officially went live on May 27, bringing an impressive collection of Warner Bros. movies and HBO series to subscribers. And with big plans for the future, including the highly anticipated Zack Snyder cut of Justice League, the service is sure to make a splash.
Like any streaming service, diversity will be the key to HBO Max’s success. Fans know that HBO excels when it comes to drama and its comedy titles aren’t too far behind. So to keep fans laughing (and subscribed), the service has turned to Conan O’Brien and his Team Coco for help.
Here’s what Conan O’Brien fans can look forward to from HBO Max.
Team Coco will be producing five stand-up comedy specials for HBO Max. The company has been behind several comedy tours and stand-up events across the country over the past few years. And given the popularity of the genre on streaming services, it was a no-brainer for O’Brien and company to work with HBO Max.
According to Deadline, O’Brien will host two of the specials and curate the content for the other three. These are all expected to be available to stream by the end of the year. HBO Max also acquired the rights to a special from comic James Veitch. He’s been a Conan guest multiple times including a set that’s earned over 25 million YouTube views.
Conan O’Brien will also be behind an original series for HBO Max. Team Coco is producing the pilot Gumshoe, a comedy about an optimistic cop and a crime-obsessed teenager who partner together to solve a crime. Actors Sonya Cassidy and Miles J. Harvey have been cast in the lead roles.
Hardcore fans of O’Brien will know that this isn’t the first time the late night television host has tried to get a crime comedy off the ground. O’Brien co-wrote Lookwell, a 1991 comedy starring Adam West that filmed exactly one episode and was not picked up by NBC. The show can be found online and has still managed to earn a sizeable fanbase.
Gumshoe should benefit from the fact that O’Brien has 20 more years of experience and has proven that he can’t miss when it comes to producing comedy, whether in the form of Conan, podcasts, or stand-up tours.
Conan Without Borders will also be available on HBO Max. Previously, a handful of the specials were streaming on Netflix. Now six specials can be found on HBO’s new service, including O’Brien’s journeys to Armenia, Japan, and Ghana.
