Stephen Colbert laments Senator Elizabeth Warren’s decision to end her presidential campaign.

The field of Democratic candidates for president, once over 20 strong, lost another contender on Thursday. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren ended her campaign after a disappointing Super Tuesday. You can count The Late Show with Stephen Colbert among those also disappointed with the result.

Warren ended her campaign after failing to keep pace with former Vice President Joe Biden and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. She was once considered the frontrunner and built an enthusiastic base of supporters thanks to her progressive ideas and grassroots approach.

Her fans also included The Late Show where Warren has been a frequent guest. Colbert clearly enjoyed interviewing the senator and wasn’t afraid to challenge her on certain issues or policy points. It is a safe bet to say that Warren will return to The Late Show before the Nov. election.

In the meantime, Colbert gave her a fond farewell from the campaign trail. In his monologue, the comedian joked that with Warren no longer an option the future of America looks a lot like its past.

Colbert makes a point to share the words Warren left with her staff members after ending her campaign, calling the Massachusetts senator “gracious and eloquent.” There is a clear level of respect from Colbert who is known for mocking just about any and every politician in the news. Instead, Colbert saves the jokes for Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. Now that it is a two-man race for the Democratic nomination, fans can expect more of that coming from The Late Show.

Colbert continued his tribute to Warren by playing clips of her answering questions on preconceived notions of the race, sexism, and her endorsement plans. None of her responses are used by Colbert to set up a joke at her expense. If there are any topics that Warren wants to discuss further in the future, she will always have a platform at The Late Show.

Stephen Colbert knows that Joe Biden or Bernie Sanders would get a major bump with an endorsement from Elizabeth Warren. It is just another example of the tremendous respect and admiration the Late Show host has for the senator. Keep a look out for Warren on a future episode of the show.
