Galentine’s Day is alive and well thanks to Amy Poehler

The tradition of Galentine’s Day lives on thanks to the Parks and Recreation stars who helped create it.
Parks and Recreation may have ended its run in 2015 but the show’s legacy is alive and well. Look no further than today’s unofficial holiday of Galentines Day as proof.
“Galentine’s Day” is a season 6 episode of Parks and Rec that first aired in 2014. Written by Emma Fletcher and Rachna Fruchbom, it featured Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knope throwing a Valentine’s Day-eve brunch where she showered her girlfriends with presents.
Like “Treat Yo Self,” the idea of Galentine’s Day quickly caught on among Parks and Rec fans and became its own annual event. Valentine’s Day can always be a tricky “holiday” for some people so the sitcom provided an alternative that celebrates the bonds of friendship rather than romance.
And Parks and Rec fans will be glad to know that Galentine’s Day is alive and well thanks to the show’s stars. On a recent Jimmy Kimmel Live! appearance, Amy Poehler revealed her Galentine’s Day plans with her former co-stars while Jimmy Kimmel tried to create a male equivalent to the day.
It just so happened that Kimmel asked Poehler about Galentine’s Day on the very night she was off to celebrate with three former co-stars. Rashida Jones and Aubrey Plaza, who played Ann Perkins and April Ludgate respectively, were part of the original Galentine’s Day celebration. Kathryn Hahn, who played political consultant Jennifer Barkley joined the cast later but played a major role in how the series ended.
You can give Jimmy Kimmel credit for trying to come up with a version of the holiday for men. His idea of drinking a gallon of something is a good start and perhaps the late night host can come up with something in time for next year’s event.
Plaza posted an picture of the Parks and Rec reunion/Galentines Day celebration on her Instagram account, much to the delight of fans who have kept the show popular on Netflix and soon on NBC’s streaming service Peacock.
