The Daily Show with Trevor Noah explained why Harry and Meghan would want to give up life in the royal family.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made headlines when they announced they would be stepping away from life in the royal family. And while many were quick to criticize the decision, and especially Meghan Markle, The Daily Show‘s Trevor Noah isn’t among them.

The public fascination with the royal family extends well beyond the United Kingdom. Things were taken to a new level when Prince Harry proposed to Meghan Markle, an American actress. They married in 2018 but it hasn’t exactly been a fairy tale for Markle, now Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

On Jan. 8, Meghan and Harry released a statement indicating a desire to step back from their royal duties and become financially independent. Their decision turned into a scandal that has been covered by every media outlet and brought out opinions from every corner of the internet.

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah has been following the story closely and on Monday, host Trevor Noah offered some insight on why the Duke and Duchess would want to push away from life in the spotlight. Per usual, Noah provides a perspective unique to late night while still maintaining The Daily Show‘s cutting humor:

Noah and The Daily Show team expertly cut side-by-side examples of how British tabloids have treated Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton. It’s hard to argue that there was always a clear attempt to discredit Meghan as “worthy” of inclusion in the royal family.

So given that treatment, and knowing the family’s history with the hysteria of mass media, it becomes a little easier to see why “Megxit” is a thing. It would be one thing if Prince Harry was in the position of Prince William when it comes to succession. But Prince Harry stands sixth in line to the throne and does not appear to be abandoning any major duties.

The royal family will always be interesting to the public and never more than when things are scandalous or controversial. Such sensationalism always sells and Trevor Noah points out the clear attempt by tabloids to create that atmosphere around Meghan. So while there are those that want to criticize Meghan or see royalty in disarray, there are those like Noah who want to offer context and a logical explanation.

The decision by Harry and Meghan will continue to sell magazines and tabloids. Unfortunately it will be nothing new for the Duchess of Sussex but at least she has a supporter in Trevor Noah.
