4. Michael Cohen Testifies

Feb. 27, 2019

It was back in Feb. that many people thought we were witnessing the final days of President Donald Trump in the White House. His former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, gave damning testimony to Congress that tied President Trump to the hush money payments to Stormy Daniels.

We now know, of course, that President Trump survived the Stormy scandal (for now). But back then, it was clear to see that the Trump White House had more skeletons in the closet that some believed. As Meyers calls it at the top of this “A Closer Look,” Cohen’s testimony was one of the most eventful days in Trump’s presidency.

The Cohen testimony was the perfect example of something made for “A Closer Look.” There were a number of  moments that could easily be forgotten once things finally came to end. But Meyers expertly broke down everything.

Michael Cohen knew he’d end up on every news program and late night show. That definitely informed the delivery of his opening statement as Meyers pointed out so well. The late night host took it even further in comparing Trump to something you’d buy from an informercial, only to find out it looked better on TV.

Beyond covering Cohen’s testimony, Meyers also paid close attention to the different approaches from Democratic and Republican lawmakers. It’s something that would come up again with the Ukraine scandal. Meyers does an excellent job of highlighting hypocrisy and the shifting goal posts coming from the GOP.
