Should fans expect to see a brand new episode of Saturday Night Live tonight on NBC?

Christmas has come and gone. Hanukkah is over. There are only a few more days left in 2019. But we are only about half way through season 45 of Saturday Night Live. So the holidays may be over, but SNL is just getting started.

Season 45 has been a wild and unpredictable one through the first 10 episodes. It has been the year of the cameo as stars like Paul Rudd, Maya Rudolph, Ryan Reynolds, and Jason Momoa have popped up in sketches. Standout hosts have included Phoebe Waller-Bridge and returning alumni Will Ferrell and Eddie Murphy.

Speaking of Murphy, he helped deliver the highest rated episode of Saturday Night Live since 2017. The episode earned a 2.7 rating, up from the 1.7 rating registered by host Scarlett Johansson the week prior. Eddie Murphy’s episode brought in an impressive 9.92 million viewers and then saw clips have a big impact online the following days.

So what will Saturday Night Live do tonight? Will it try to keep the momentum of last week going? Or is the show taking a break to recover?

There will not be a new episode of Saturday Night Live for Dec. 28. The show was off for the holidays and is set to return on Jan 25. 2020.

That is quite a long layoff but one that is always built in to the season’s schedule. It gives the cast, writers, crew, and staff time to recharge before a hectic run to close out the season.

But when Saturday Night Live does return, it will be with a bang. It was announced that Adam Driver will return to host for the third time and for the second consecutive season. The musical guest will be Halsey, another performer who appeared in season 44 as both host and musical guest.

Driver is coming off a very impressive year. He received critical acclaim for his role in the Netflix film Marriage Story and he capped off his run as Kylo Ren/Ben Solo with a standout performance in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Both times he has hosted Saturday Night Live, Driver has contributed a memorable sketch that was among the year’s best.
