Jimmy Kimmel defends Greta Thunberg against Trump’s outburst
By Matt Moore
Jimmy Kimmel retracted his compliment to President Donald Trump after he tweeted about Time’s Person of the Year Greta Thunberg.
It is rare for any late night host to pay a compliment to President Donald Trump. Jimmy Kimmel is especially slow to say something positive about the Commander-in-Chief. Yet Kimmel did just that when President Trump appeared to take losing Time‘s Person of the Year to Greta Thunberg in stride. But then President Trump started tweeting.
Time announced that 16-year-old climate change activist Greta Thunberg was its 2019 Person of the Year. Thunberg was among four finalists that also included President Donald Trump. Thunberg and President Trump aren’t exactly fans of one other, leading some to worry about how the American president would react.
But when President Trump appeared to be silent on the Person of the Year topic, Jimmy Kimmel commended him for his restraint. Unfortunately, Trump did not remain in Kimmel’s good graces for very long. Perhaps it was his impending impeachment that distracted President Trump but eventually got around to commenting on Time‘s decision.
President Trump, in typical fashion, took to Twitter to call out Thunberg. He described the teenager as having anger management issues and suggested she chill out and watch a movie. The President was widely criticized for mocking Thunberg and Jimmy Kimmel was among those coming to her defense.
Jimmy Kimmel calling Donald Trump “unpresidential” is nothing new. It is usually for how President Trump has interacted with other world leaders or tried to subvert the rule of law. But going after a teenager out of jealousy, in what amounts to cyberbullying seemed to especially annoy Kimmel.
The late night host was quick to remind everyone that it wasn’t long ago that First Lady Melania Trump and some Republicans criticized a reference to Barron Trump during an impeachment hearing. Yet First Lady Trump and others were silent when it came to President Trump’s outburst towards a 16-year-old.
It looks like Greta Thunberg doesn’t need Kimmel or anyone else to defend her against President Trump. She quickly changed her Twitter bio to troll President Trump, much like she did the last time the President delivered backhanded remarks.
Still, Kimmel is a comedian and a late nigh one at that. So he was sure to get his jokes in at Trump’s expense after seeing yet another bizarre photoshop from Team Trump.
No matter the backlash, it is unlikely that President Donald Trump will regret going after Greta Thunberg. Because as Jimmy Kimmel said, it is just another example of the President acting unpresidential.
