Chris Evans admitted that he may have jumped the gun in telling Anthony Mackie about Captain America.

Few things in the entertainment world are as secretive as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The stars of the movies are expected to keep plot details and projects under lock and key. But even Captain America himself Chris Evans had trouble keeping Avengers: Endgame spoilers to himself.

We will be getting into Avengers: Endgame and future MCU spoilers here. So in the very, very, very unlikely case you haven’t seen Endgame yet, consider this your warning.

Going in to Avengers: Endgame it was understood that not all of the heroes were expected to survive. That turned out to be true for Iron Man and Black Widow even though Scarlett Johansson finally has a solo film on the way.

Captain America also had his story line closed albeit not in the form of his character’s death. As you’ll recall, Steve Rogers returned to the present very much an old man. He passed on Cap’s iconic shield to Sam Wilson, AKA the Falcon, played by Anthony Mackie. It was a touching moment on screen and one that Marvel Comics’ fans knew was a possibility.

On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Chris Evans reflected back on the end of his run as Captain America. He was relieved to finally be able to openly discuss Endgame now that he doesn’t have to keep Marvel’s secrets. On that topic, he revealed that he may have spoiled things for Anthony Mackie a little too soon.

So Anthony Mackie thought he was just going over to Chris Evans’ house to watch football. But instead he ended up being told that he will be the next Captain American in the Marvel Cinematic. You have to imagine it was hard to sit through a football game after that.

As Evans told Jimmy Fallon, he wasn’t sure if it was his place to tell Mackie the good news. Yet wouldn’t Evans be the perfect person to pass the baton over to Mackie just like the shield was passed between their characters?

Evans also admitted that lifting Thor’s hammer for the first time was better than using Captain America’s shield. That makes sense, considering Evans knew from the start that he’d have the shield. Hopefully Chris Hemsworth is good with sharing the hammer by now since Natalie Portman is next in line to lift Mjolnir.

Chris Evans coped to the fact that he is a terrible liar in real life. That could be part of the reason he was so quick to spoil Avengers: Endgame for Anthony Mackie. But no matter how or when he heard the news, Mackie sounds ecstatic about his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
