On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Emilia Clarke revealed the culprit behind the infamous Game of Thrones Starbucks cup.

Game of Thrones aired its series finale months ago but that doesn’t mean fans are done dissecting every scene. Hidden details are still being uncovered as people rewatch the final season and more behind-the-scenes stories come to light. Thanks to Emilia Clarke, we now know who was responsible for one of the most infamous scenes in Game of Thrones history.

As fans will recall, a scene set in Winterfell featured many of the show’s heroes gathered for a feast. During one particular shot, a Starbucks coffee cup was visible on the table behind actor Kit Harington and in front of actress Emilia Clarke.

The mistake went viral with late night also joining in on mocking Starbucks coming to Westeros. Actor Liam Cunningham brought the cup to Conan as just one of the many gags inspired by the incident.

Many people were curious as to who exactly left the cup on the table during the shot. Actress Sophie Turner had one theory during her last appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Turner accused Emilia Clarke, noting that the cup appears closest to Clarke in the scene. Fans ran with that story in part due to the on-screen tension building between Turner’s Sansa Stark and Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen.

But on Wednesday night, Clarke was able to tell her side of the story on The Tonight Show. Watch as she first describes a night out dancing with Jason Momoa and Kit Harington before revealing who is truly responsible for the coffee cup.

It was Varys himself, Conleth Hill. Of course the Master of Whispers would be the one holding on to this secret. It’s just further proof that Game of Thrones was perfectly cast from start to finish. Hill was clearly content to let Clarke take all the blame despite his role in Coffee Cup-gate.

Perhaps Hill had some misplaced resentment against Daenerys given the fate of Varys in the final season. Fans are well aware that Hill was less than pleased with how his story was concluded on Game of Thrones. His final revenge may have been letting Clarke take the heat in a bit of poetic justice for the burned Varys.

Game of Thrones fans can now rest easy knowing that Emilia Clarke has solved that mystery for them. As to why season eight didn’t quite satisfy all GoT fans is another mystery for another time.
