Scarlett Johansson gives Black Widow update, calling the movie closure
By Matt Moore
On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Scarlett Johansson gave fans some updates on Black Widow.
It hasn’t been too long since fans have seen an Avenger on the big screen but there is still no “offseason” when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With countless movies and television series in production or development, there are always updates to be given or rumors to be addressed. Scarlett Johansson did just that with Black Widow on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Late night has become an important part of the superhero movie machine. Jimmy Kimmel Live! has become the unofficial late night home of the Avengers thanks to their shared Disney bosses. Conan has hosted panels for DC films like Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Aquaman.
But there are plenty of superheroes to go around and plenty of late night shows to host them. Any time an MCU actor or actress is out promoting a new project, you can be sure that the Marvel movies will be brought up in the interview.
Typically, there isn’t much that can be said about an upcoming movie or TV series. Spoilers are a real problem and the filmmakers would much rather have audiences experience the movies without any preconceived notions or inside information.
Still, any news is good news when it comes to the MCU. On The Tonight Show, Scarlett Johansson gave an update on her long awaited solo film Black Widow. In the highly unlikely chance you haven’t seen Avengers: Endgame, there are spoilers ahead in the interview with Jimmy Fallon.
For those of you who have seen Avengers: Endgame, then you know that Johansson’s Black Widow character sacrificed herself and thus ended her story in the Avengers saga. Despite the very obvious death of her character, fans are holding out hope that Black Widow can somehow be revived or exist in an alternate universe.
It is a testament to the popularity of Black Widow as a character and of Johansson as a performer. She has been in the MCU since 2010’s Iron Man 2. But Johansson shuts down any theory that would see Natasha Romanoff return in the future MCU timeline.
But that doesn’t mean Marvel can’t look back into Romanoff’s past. That will be the story behind Black Widow, set for a May 1, 2020 release. The movie will be set following the events of Captain America: Civil War. Johansson tells Fallon that they recently wrapped up shooting of the movie and primarily filmed in London.
Johansson is clearly very passionate about the character and the project despite her fate in Endgame. There was obviously more to Black Widow than what fans saw and the character deserved a solo movie like the other Avengers.
Scarlett Johansson described filming Black Widow as “closure.” We’ll have to wait to see if that means that the movie will be the last time we see her on the big screen as Natasha Romanoff. No matter what, late night television will play a big role in hyping the next Marvel Cinematic Universe movie.
