Conan O’Brien landed in Greenland with plans to buy the country, but immediately ran into some resistance.

Negotiations can be a tricky business. And as Conan O’Brien found out, negotiating the purchase of a country can be especially tricky when the people want no part of the deal.

Conan Without Borders: Greenland aired on Tuesday night. It’s the latest travel special from O’Brien in what has become a signature feature from the longtime late night host.

The decision to travel to Greenland followed comments from President Donald Trump suggesting that the U.S. wanted to buy Greenland from Denmark. The idea was immediately dismissed by Greenland and Denmark.

O’Brien doesn’t lean into politics to nearly the same degree as other late night hosts like Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, or Seth Meyers. He’s admitted that other shows do it much better than he could, so why bother. Instead, Conan has found more creative ways to spin the Trump era into content.

The absurdity of buying Greenland gave O’Brien the perfect excuse to travel to a country unfamiliar to most American viewers. But as O’Brien quickly found out, the people of Greenland are very familiar with Americans and they are not interested.

If the people of Nuuk are any indication, then the people of Greenland have a fantastic sense of humor. It must have been a welcomed discovery for O’Brien to find so many people willing to play along with him and give him the kind of answers he needed to play the fool.

It also looks like O’Brien’s drive/travel guide will join the long list of international guides who grow exasperated by trying to wrangle him. Fans have seen it before with O’Brien’s Japanese etiquette coach, his Korean language teacher, and Australian animal expert.

Conan O’Brien certainly had his work cut out for him in convincing Greenland to become part of the U.S. Apparently nobody wants to join a country that is filled with overweight people eating unhealthy fast food and listening to bad music. But if anyone can do it, it’s the man who negotiated an 11:00 timeslot at TBS.
